3/24/2009 OMG moment of the dayThe Smurfs = 蓝精灵?!?!?! This explains many of the smurf jokes I've been hearing... Among which is the big one in "How I Met Your Mother" pilot... (yea, the one with the blue French Horn) This is one of those "恍然大悟" moments that makes living in a foreign culture fun. 随便在网上找的recipe: 1 banana 1/2 cup of yogurt 1 cup of orange juice 先把这三样打匀,然后再加: 1 large mango diced and chilled 6 ice cubes 继续打匀。Ta-da! 不过这对我的下一步计划是好消息啊——我一直crave/fantasize的Margarita,you’re up next! 3/21/2009 Marty's Liquors
That’s what I love about local news. First of all, the subject being mentioned is something that I actually have previous knowledge of, it’s like – hey I know that place! Secondly, the journalist always finds a way to make the story (laughably) sentimental. Like using the word “landmark”, pointing out its existence in Allston for “60 year”, plus throwing in some personal stories of the owner and the customers. By the way, I probably wouldn’t think of Marty’s Liquors as a “landmark” (usually I would think of “landmark” as something much grander), but now that the “L” word is used, it does seem kind of appropriate. At least whenever I ride on the B line and when I see that liquor store, I know I’m at Harvard Street. I couldn’t remember whether I have actually shopped there, but Marty’s did appear to be an indispensable part of the “alcohol culture” along Harvard Street between Brighton Ave. and Comm. Ave. (you know, with several bars and big liquor stores concentrated on the block). I’m sure Marty’s will be missed by the “醉猫” (quoting Tom) community. 3/9/2009 Some more Coldplay stuff They're on tour again, and here's a video clip from Down Under (Brisbane to be exact). Awww... when are they gonna come back to Boston for a third time? (in fact, they do have a concert scheduled somewhere in Massacheussettes in the summer, but the venue is kind of far for me to go... sad...) By the way, they'll be visiting Hong Kong later this month. Any of you going? 3/7/2009 It's a beautiful day早从天气预报得知今天会很暖,但踏出家门的一刻还是pleasantly surprised了一下。 Daylight Saving Time already?
Well, just watching David Letterman and heard it mentioned. It seems that DST starts this weekend. Even though it means we'll lose an hour (of sleep), it also means that we are getting more daylight, which is pleasant! Spring should be upon us soon! Don't take it for granted though - as an immigrant New Englander, I've learnt not to take nice and warm weather for granted, especially after a turbulent start of March. Anyway, for those of you in the US, don't forget to adjust your clock this Sunday. 我今天7点多爬起来(considering it's a Sunday, it's actually a semi-miracle!),结果折腾到10点多才到convention center,今天第一part的seminar已经结束(8:15-10:15am, absolutely brutal)。I was just in time for a half-hour break,所以才有闲情写blog。 希望你们不要介意我的大嘴巴~ 好事本来就应该传千里嘛 :P 2/20/2009 Expiration DateI shut down my xanga account today, after an exact 5-year membership. I have actually written quite a lot over there, documenting my days as an exchange student in Hong Kong, my last year in PKU, and the first couple of years in the United States. Good times and bad times. I read some of those posts the other day, and as always, was amazed by how fast things are being forgotten and how much I have changed or not changed. I am glad I wrote those stuff down at the time, and hope I was being honest to myself back then. Because it turns out that those genuine thoughts are important for self-reflection. This serves as a reminder that honesty should be the rule of thumb as long as I write. As a matter of fact, I still have all the posts in archive. They are just moved from a shared domain to a place where only myself have access. I would still like to keep those memories, but only to myself from now on. Xanga is actually the second blog I've abandoned. And I wouldn't rule out the possibility that here would be shut down some day as well (if I ever feel that it's the right thing to do). Like it or not, most things in life have an expiration date: food in the fridge, pills in the medicine cabinet, coupons from the mails, visa to a foreign country, feelings for that special someone, and yes, a beating heart. When the time comes, say goodbye, be grateful for what you have had, and move on. To the last five awesome years! 2/18/2009 Random Quote from HIMYM"How I Met Your Mother" Season 2 Episode 16: When invited to Lily's play, Barney's response was:
It was supposed to be funny (one of the many "Barneyism"), but there's some truth to what was said. Well, it just somehow clicks with me. I know I have done some of those stuff (ahem) because I'm still a poor grad student, but I'm definitely in the process towards managing things the grown-up way. When you get to a certain age, friends are only for fun stuff like hanging out, and not for laboring any more ;) --------------More TV-------------- 另,上周四的30 Rock,那个毕业于Harvard Divinity School的可怜神父被Jack Donaghy在confession时折磨得愤然离场,大叫"Harvard did not prepare me for this!",也属于本周memorable台词啊。
----------------Read on for more info on HIMYM---------------- "How I Met Your Mother" is a sitcom carrying some resemblance to "Friends" (main characters at their late 20's/early 30's, living in New York City and regularly hanging out in a bar (versus a coffee shop), seeking for romance while figuring out about themselves) but with way more flashbacks and flash-forwards. The show started out with Ted Mosby, in the year 2030, telling his son and daughter the stories that lead to his meeting their mother (thus the show title). The other main characters include Marshall Eriksen, Ted's roommate and best friend from college; Lily Aldrin, Marshall's long-time girlfriend since freshman year in college (the couple got married at the end of Season 2); Barney Stinson, who met Ted in a men's room in a bar, a womanizer that is mostly interested in one night stands and offers many strategies designed to help Ted meet women; Robin Scherbatsky, who first met Ted in the Pilot episode, and remained Ted's love interest/friend throughout the first couple of seasons. ----------------My take on HIMYM---------------- I first knew of HIMYM because of its time slot. It airs Monday night 8:30-9 on CBS, which is the lead-in for my favorite show Two And A Half Men. I decided to give it a try during last holiday break for no other reason than that I was bored. Because of the availability of the videos, I watched the episodes in sort of a backward order: the most recent episodes from the current season (Season 4) can be viewed online at CBS.com (fastest); earlier episodes of Season 4 as well as a few from Season 3 could be directly download (still pretty fast); then I download the rest of Season 3 plus the complete Season 1+2 through BT (which took quite some time). I thought order was not important for sitcoms. As it turns out, however, this is not the case for HIMYM. I did not enjoy the show too much until I got to the first two seasons. But it could well be that the earlier seasons are indeed better, which is not uncommon with TV productions. In my opinion, even though HIMYM does have its funny moments, overall it is not "rolling on floor laughing" kind of funny. Which may be the very reason why I decided not to watch it more than once after the first few episodes I saw. But later I find that the show has a lot of heart - especially the first two seasons. So I change my mind and decide to give it another chance. I will watch the entire show again in the right order. Yea... I bought Season 1-3 on DVD on Amazon.com :P A warning to those who want to give the show a try, though. If you have fierce curiosity and usually can't wait till you find out the answer, you might be tortured by the many little teasers in show, let alone the ultimate mystery - the identity of the mother, which probably won't be revealed until the finale of the series. Words are that the producers already have a pretty good idea who the mother will be, but they just won't let us know. Bastards. 2/13/2009 Look what I found! Saw a news flash on TV last night mentioning BC and crucifixes. Out of curiosity, I googled it. Hey, not expecting to see a name that I know! But then again, not surprised to see the name either. An @sshole does what an @sshole does. Anyway, some of the reader comments really cracked me up. Here's the link: http://news.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1151661&format=text By the way, it's either I haven't been to a classroom for a while, or I'm pretty negligent of things going around me - I haven't even noticed the new additions of crucifixes... 2/8/2009 For Friends fans out there Jen revisited the set of Friends last week during The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Here's the video. Enjoy! 2/6/2009 我是电视精一个星期七天,我有七天是看电视的 - House, Two And A Half Men, 30 Rock, The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, How I Met Your Mother, plus occasionally Late Show with David Letterman/The Tonight Show with Jay Leno/Jimmy Kimmel Live/Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Especially for Jessie the former i-banker
Update: 在Hulu.com找到了上述片段,大家趁该episode未expire之前看吧~ By the way,Hulu这个网站资源颇丰富的,连Alec Baldwin也为它卖广告呢。
30 Rock口碑好(by that I mean critically acclaimed, look at all the Emmy's and Golden Globes they got),但收视麻麻,与Two And A Half Men刚好相反。虽然我心目中始终最喜欢后者,不过我认同Tina Fey的确是个才女,在幕后能写(first female head writer for SNL)、转为幕前能演(已凭30 Rock拿了好几个best actress in comedy的奖, and of course you remember her Sarah Palin parodies),样子也颇为顺眼,不愧为新一代American sweetheart呢。
其实the occasional drinking helps to loosen up yourself,没有什么不好的。 2/1/2009 Maybe this is the closure I needI am a little drunk right now, but I think I already get what I have needed for so long - a closure. I am actually glad to find out that he is not fun any more, which means I am NOT missing out that much. Therefore, be happy for me, my friends, because, from today on, I can officially move on with my life! 1/31/2009 (Not) Just Another WeekendWhat would this weekend turn out to be? It seems that I'm not off to a very good start. All I have been feeling on the fine Friday night is that I'm pathetic. First clue? It was only 9ish and all I wanted to do was to take a shower and hop on my bed, watch some TV/movie, and then go to sleep; then of course, life didn't turn out the way I planned. Somehow I got into a really long conference call (with some very interesting struggle to try to get everybody into the conference at the beginning - it was frustrating AND hilarious). For whatever reason, a conference call set out to plan something together always turns into a conversation of a string of random topics. We covered subjects like how germs could be passed around with water fountain; how someone referred to a conference call as a "threesome" on a bus and got some stares from his bus-riding mates (then again, why wouldn't he?); and then somehow TV shows like "A Step into the Past"(寻秦记) and "Two and a Half Men" were brought up... In the end, in spite of all the randomness, we did pin down some rough plan for Sunday... It was well past midnight when I decided to hang up (people complained about me being on the line anyway because they said my headset was making noise... sigh). Then I found myself famished, and had to get myself something to eat, which again made me feel pretty pathetic - you know you are when you have to heat up turnip cake for snack in the middle of the night just because you don't quite yet want to go to sleep even though you ARE tired! A sense of unsettledness still hangs around. Or is it restlessness. Maybe I'm just sleep-deprived.
On a different subject, is there anyone who likes "Two and a Half Men" or at least has seen it? I was planning to write something very relevant to the show and just wanted to see how much audience I would get. If you're at all curious, tune in for the upcoming episode titled "David Copperfield Slipped Me a Roofie" Monday (Feb 2nd) 9pm on CBS! 1/20/2009 感谢你们的留言 想不到一篇思路不是很连贯的感慨,能引来一些很久没有直接对话的朋友发表意见。 I'm very excited. I had more of a panic going into 30. I think you realize that it just gets better. When they say youth is wasted on the young, it's so true." It just gets better,一下子如醍醐灌顶,令我瞬间信服。 |
