10/31/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: Happy Halloween! So, finally, today is the day! Everything is about Halloween! You see it (decorations), you feel it (atmosphere), you wear it (costumes), you taste it (candies, pumpkin pies, decorative cakes, etc).
Even if you are in an area where Halloween is not widely celebrated, you could still get hold of the festive spirit from all these DP blogs. As a matter of fact, as Halloween is approaching, there are so many posts relevant to Halloween coming up that I have a really hard time to choose which ones to show you. As a result, the list of items I am sharing today is kind of long, please read at your own pace! :)
PS. Despite the controversy over Halloween being anthor example of intrusion of American culture, to me, it's just about getting together with friends, having some fun and feeling young at heart in the name of whatever (in this case, in the name of Halloween). I feel lucky that I get a legislated reason to celebrate without worrying about what others say -- I am right here in the US where it is REALLY popular!
10/30/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: Jack o'lanternAs promised yesterday, I'm showing you images of Jack O'Lanterns (maybe with some other Halloween decorations) from all over the United States as well as one from Germany.
Does your area celebrate Halloween? If it does, you'd better prepare at least some candies in case kiddies knock on your door! Even if nobody comes "trick or treat", you could always eat the candies yourself, hehe.
Happy Monday! Have some SCARY PAR-TEEs!
PS. I was also a big pumpkin for a Halloween party on Saturday.
10/29/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: Pumpkins everywhere!Pumpkins, among many others, are a traditional symbol of Halloween. For people like me who are not too familiar with the history of Halloween and the Jack O'Lantern (carved pumpkins), you can take a look at how Wikipedia describes them. Today I'm showing you some "real" (a.k.a. uncarved) pumpkins, which will be followed tomorrow by the evil-looking pumpkins you usually see during Halloween season.
By the way, for people living in areas that use DST (Day-light Saving Time), don't forget to change your clock! We're back to non-DST!
Happy Sunday~ 10/26/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: Spooky Stories -- Let the reading fun continue!Halloween is just around the corner! Many of the photo blogs have already gotten the Halloween spirit flowing aournd~ Therefore I am thinking about doing a whole series of Halloween stuff, displaying costumes, carved pumpkins and other decorations, and something else not to be missed -- spine-tingling tales! Even the Official Google Blog had a post about Halloween today. So, please dig in and enjoy the festive spirit!
10/23/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: John Carlyle House storiesHave been having tons to read these days... Immerged in the world of chemistry... (Such joy!
In turn, I'd like to give something for you, my visitors, to read... which is probably more fun than what I have to. Alexandria Daily Photo has been doing a series of pictures telling the stories of John Carlyle House, which is allegedly a haunted house that has been turned to a museum. I dare you to read them all! Muahahahahah....
10/20/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated:Hot Air BalloonsAlbuquerque (New Mexico, USA) recently held the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and the Albuquerque Daily Photo has shared quite a few pictures of the fiesta over the last week. Many of the hot air balloons shown are really creative. Check them out!
Happy Friday people!
10/19/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: SunsetTo many people, sunset is a romantic, tranquil and relaxing moment to cherish. Well, at least in imagination... The complex idea people have for sunset (日落情结) probably roots from the pre-electric days. Back then, sunset meant the end of the day's work, where people tended to be more relaxed, and that's when all the romantic ideas came out.
Modern life is definitely more hectic. Take myself for example, I can't remember the last time I left work before or around sunset. With the winter coming, it seems like I am doomed to head home in the dark. Working in an enclosed building makes it almost impossible to see what is going on outside. Therefore, the images of sunset now exist only in my memory, and... of course these pictures I am sharing.
Hope it's not too long a day for you. Smile~
10/17/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: DallasGot an promotional email from American Airlines today and the following is an excerpt of the email:
Support Our New Gateway To China Today Although the launch of this particular route probably won't benefit me too much, I still signed the petition. Well, I just think that it's always a good thing to have more choices. Plus, more competition among the airlines would probably help bring down the fare, which is what I'd like to see. Anyway, if you hold the same sort of attitude, you might as well sign the online petition~ It's just a matter of 1 minute. As a result of the email, I am doing a Dallas speical today. It's an interesting city to explore, at least through pictures. 10/16/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: ChicagoI haven't been to the Windy City yet. I am sure it's well worth a visit. Maybe those of you who have already experienced it could tell me more
To find out some general information of Chicago, go wikipedia it~
Happy Monday people!
10/15/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: AnimalsBig or small, they all look cute. Haven't been to a zoo for a long time. Probably should go to one some time.
10/10/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: Sleeping BeautiesIt's a long day for me today. Even though I didn't do any experiment, I still feel tired. A lot of information to deal with, a lot of decisions to make.
Sometimes I just wish I were one of these lovely creatures so that I could sleep all I want and people still adore me.
Fay's Shared Items updated: BostonBack in Boston this afternoon. The weather was really beautiful today. Sunny, colorful, and warm, totally alluring me to go outdoor, even just for a walk. Too bad I spent half of the day travelling back home and the other half doing laundry and stuff.
I don't recall how I felt about coming to Boston when I got the offer from BC. But now I can say I like Boston. Not crazily in love, but like this city enough to be content and smiling every day, even without my dearest ones by my side.
The items picked today are from BostonPhoto Blog as well as Honolulu Daily Photos. For the latter, it was because the author happened to be in Boston and showed us the picutures he/she took in here.
Happy Tuesday!
10/8/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: Moon & Fall SpecialThe actual Mid-Autumn Festival was the past Friday. But for people like me who still had to work on that day, the holiday is actually celebrated during the weekend. I had a pretty traditional celebration even outside China, in terms of food, that is. We had mooncake, 芋头, and 沙田柚, which is more or less the same as what I would have if I were in China. However, we didn't go out to appreciate the moon. I did walk outdoors for a bit after dinner tonight, and the moon was still round and big.
The items I am sharing today include some moon pictures around the world, namely Las Vegas (CA, USA), Sydney (Australia), and Gurgaon (India).
Also included are some typical fall scenery. The fall in northeast US (that is where I live) as well as in other cities is strikingly beautiful with intense colors. Do take a look! It's worth it even if you would just look at the pictures and ignore the words. It's okay that you haven't even heard of the place where the pictures were taken. Wikipedia it and you'll be glad you do. Still so much to learn about the world, huh?
10/7/2006 Fay's Shared Items updated: New YorkSince I am currently spending the Columbus Day long weekend in New York, it's easy to understand why I picked the New York Daily Photo as today's topic.
New York City, is truly a versatile metropolis, and so much more than just a "concrete jungle". For many first-time visitors to NYC, the skyscrapers are probably the first things to be noticed and admired/hated, but there are a lot of things happening around this 5-borough district other than the buildings.
You'll see some interesting facets of NYC in my hand-picked items. Go find out more by visiting their original blog(s) if you are eager for more info!
PS.
I posted the last entry through my cell phone while I was on the bus from Boston to New York last night. The format didn't come out quite right and the picture I attached was not shown. So I did a bit alternation on a computer today. Hope the change wouldn't impair the authenticity too much.
Again, there are a lot of things I don't like about MSN space, e.g. the inconvience to insert a picture in a post, and the lack of flexibility on designing the layout. But I need to admit that they have an advantage: popularity. By associating MSN Messenger, which has already had a large base of users, with MSN space, it is so much easier to promote a blog at MSN Space than promoting those at other blog providers. Anyhoo, thanks for those who have visited or even left a message~!
Have a nice weekend!
10/6/2006 StuckStuck in South Station for the last 3hr or so. The traffic between NYC and Boston was so bad that a lot of people were kept at the station waiting for the buses that were stuck in the traffic. I got a 9:30 ticket at 7pm, but actually set off at around 10:30. What a night for Mid-autumn festival! Shouldn't I be looking at the moon instead? Anyway, this was what it looked like at 8pm at the station.
This message was sent from a T-Mobile wireless phone. 10/5/2006 Grand OpeningNot that I suddenly decided to give myself a little boost in order to fit in the trend of having a personal blog. As a matter of fact, I started my blog more than two years ago, which is way earlier than most of my friends (who, are probably the first readers to this brand new space) did. However, I don't really want to share my writings with too many people, especially people I see every day. This is simply because I put my very own genuine and sometimes too private thoughts on it, which might be seriously hampered if I am too reader-cautious. In other words, just call me weird :P
Anyway, that's why I never let out the link to my blog in high-profile situation, such as linking it with my MSN account. Then why the heck am I starting here anyway, you might wonder. As you may or may not be aware, Google Reader has lately come out with this new function that allows one to publish interesting items on his/her public sharing page for friends to see. Even before that, through Google Reader, I had subscribed to quite a few interesting blogs either by my friends or by somebody I don't know in person, and had been enjoying it so far. In contrast to the attitude towards sharing my own blog, I've always loved to share interesting stuff I find on the internet. With this new function of Google Reader, I am greatly encouraged to do so with more efficiency. That is what here is for: notifying you about my sharing page, as well as announcing any update or maybe even a few words of comments on the items I have picked.
I am really grateful if you did read through until here! (I know, it's long-winded!) So here you go the link to my sharing page:
So far all the items are from one particular type of blog called "daily photo". The essential idea is to post a photo on the blog everyday and make a few comments on the photo. What is special is that all the pictures in a specific blog are related to a specific city. So far there are already a large number of bloggers all around the world contributing to such blogs, forming an international network. Reading through these blogs is absolutely eye-opening. The number of cities that are included in the "daily photo family" is probably more than that you could ever visit during your life-time. I always feel exhilarated when I read them, hence I think you might like them too.
The first few items on my sharing page includes a few posts from San Diego (CA, USA), as well as from Sydney (Australia), Hong Kong (PRC), Atlanta (GA, USA), Cambridge (UK), Los Angeles (CA, USA), London (UK), Melbourne (Australia), and Las Vegas (NV, USA). You are also very welcome to check out the blogs themselves, to dig out more treasure from these beautifully made blogs. I promise more will come on a daily basis. But of course, that also depends on the feedback I've got. Therefore, feel free to leave comments here to let me know what you think! You can discuss the items I have picked, what I have talked about here at "Fay's Hand-picked Goodies", or just to say hi.
A few side notes:
1) Do check out the Google Reader if you are addicted to reading friends' blogs as much as I am.
2) If you really want to know my "real" blog (well, this is real too, in a sense), just ask. I might tell you! :P
3) There are a lot of things I don't like about MSN Space, but there's one thing about it I do like: you could list out all the friendly links you want with any description you feel like. I'm figuring out how to combine this function with Google Reader subscription lists (which is also a very cool function). Come back and check out the changes later!
